The Hartness House is a historic 40 room inn and restaurant in Springfield, Vermont. Built in 1904, it is one Vermont's relatively small number of high-style "Shingle Style" houses. It was built for James Hartness, owner of a local machine factory and later Governor of Vermont. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. There are 11 rooms in the main mansion plus The Governor's Room used for special events. The main inn building also has a commercial kitchen, restaurant, lounge & reception areas. One of the most unique features of the property is a large telescope and underground observatory which was built by Mr. Hartness and connected to the mansion by an underground tunnel. A wing attached to The Hartness House was completed in the 1950s and contains a small conference room for 12 people, 5 additional guest rooms, the SPA and a common room for guests. An additional wing was added in 1972 with 24 more guest rooms. The property consists of +/- 30 acres of land - most of it wooded with original trails built for Mr. Hartness including 7 stone bridges. The inn's grounds have been painstakingly developed and includes an area for an outdoor tent used for special events . Springfield has been designated as a Federal Opportunity Zone: a new tax incentive aimed at increasing private investment. Investors in these zones receive preferential tax treatment when they invest in a newly created “Opportunity Fund.”
